Marjorie Jacqueline "Marge" Bouvier is a fictional character in the American animated sitcom The Simpsons. She is the wife of Homer Simpson, and the mother of Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
Marge is generally a stereotypical sitcom mother, and she also plays the "long-suffering wife" who puts up with the antics of her children and her oafish husband. While she usually takes her family's problems with good humor, in "Homer Alone" (season three, 1992), her workload and resultant stress caused her to have a mental breakdown. After spending time at "Rancho Relaxo", during which her family barely coped with her absence, she returned refreshed and everyone promised to help out more often. Marge often provides a grounding opinion for Homer and their marriage has often been shaky. Marge admits that she "put[s] up with a lot in [their] marriage," and has left Homer or thrown him out of the house on several occasions. One of the first such episodes to depict this is "Secrets of a Successful Marriage" (season five, 1994), where Homer starts teaching an adult education class on how to build a successful marriage. He is at first unsuccessful, but gains the interest of the class when he starts giving away family secrets, many of which concern Marge. Upon finding this out, Marge is incensed and throws him out of the house. The next day, Homer is dirty and disheveled, and begs Marge to take him back, saying the one thing he can offer her that nobody else can is "complete and utter dependence." At first, Marge does not see that as a benefit, but eventually admits that he "really [does] make a gal feel needed." Episodes that depict marital problems have become more frequent in recent seasons of the show. Through it all, Marge has remained faithful to Homer, despite temptations to the contrary such as the one in "Life on the Fast Lane" (season one, 1990), where she resists the charming Frenchman Jacques and instead chooses to remain with Homer.
Marge usually wears a strapless green dress, strapless white negligee with pink frills and bows (as in The Simpsons Movie), red shoes, and a red pearl necklace. The pearl necklace is a family heirloom and she is seen to have a big drawer full of them. Lisa also wears a pearl necklace, but with white pearls. Doctor Hibbert revealed that she has webbed toes in "Marge in Chains". She remarked that she used to have a "perfect 36-26-36" figure.
Strong Arms of the Ma (Season 14, Episode 9) Edit
After shopping at Rainier Wolfcastle's bankuptcy sale, Marge gets mugged by a hobo near the Kwik-E-Mart's bathroom, and as a result becomes agoraphobic, never wanting to leave the safety of her home. Marge eventually becomes bored being cooped up in the house, and decides to go weightlifting using the weights bought from the bankruptcy sale in her spare time. This leads to her gaining the courage to go outside, mug the hobo who mugged her, and take up bodybuilding. At some point, she meets up with Ruth Powers, who also became a bodybuilder, during her exercises. Ruth goads Marge into using steroids, which leads to drug abuse and a women’s bodybuilding contest, all while scaring her family in the process. She sees the error of her ways after beating up all the patrons (barring Homer) in Moe's Tavern and Homer trying to snap her out of it, thus ending her bodybuilding craze.
The Simpsons: Tapped Out Edit
Muscular Marge makes a reappearance in the latest Simpsons app, as a costume for Marge when the player buys the premium building Shapes: A Gym for Women. Marge decides to buff up when the newly constructed building comes into Springfield, as Homer fears that she might go mad with power like last time. However, he quickly changes his mind when he gets mugged by the same hobo that caused Marge to become agoraphobic and Marge comes to his rescue. Homer then takes advantage of this and starts making cries for help for little incidents in hopes that Marge will defend him. However, Marge notices this shift in dynamics between her and her husband, and decides that it's probably best to quit bodybuilding.
